Description

Learn how to finish a round canvas into an ornament using the lacing technique with Kelsea Neal of Monarch Needlepoint Finishing. Open to beginners who have never tried finishing, or anyone looking to hone their technique.

What you’ll learn

  • How to prepare and trim your canvas
  • Mounting over mat board and batting, and attaching your backing without any glue
  • Making your own cording

What to bring

  • Your stitched canvas, with finishing rows added if needed (see below)
  • Backing fabric: lightweight, non-stretchy quilting cotton. A fat quarter, or a piece that covers your whole design with about an inch all around
  • New, uncut skeins of DMC Cotton Perle No. 5 for cording, one per color. Kelsea recommends three colors.
  • Reading glasses, if you use them for stitching

Do you need finishing rows? If an important part of your design comes within 2–3 rows of the edge, stitch 2–3 more rows all the way around in your background color before class. Plain basketweave is fine even if your background uses a decorative stitch.

All other tools and materials are provided, and your take-home kit is yours to keep.
